Stephen McCombie


Position: Academic Director Cybercrime Research Lab

Qualifications: PhD - Computer Science (Macquarie), MIT (Deakin), GradDipComp (Deakin), BA - Political Science (Macquarie).

Stephen's current research interests are in cybercrime, digital forensics and information warfare having published a large number of papers on these topics.  He currently works for CSC in information security and manages their global Security Incident Response Control Centre (SIRCC).  Stephen is a research associate at the Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism at Macquarie University and had been, until recently, lecturing in computer forensics and cybercrime at the  centre. His research draws on a diverse background in policing, security, information technology and the military.  Stephen was the founder and manager of the National Australia Bank's Computer Emergency Response Team (nabCERT). In 2009 nabCERT won AusCERT's Annual Award for Organisational Excellence in Information Security.  He held similar roles in IBM and Westpac Bank and worked in corporate security at Qantas as an investigator.  Stephen prior to working in industry spent 14 years in the NSW Police as a Detective and was instrumental in the establishment of their computer crime investigation team. He also served as a soldier in the Australian Regular Army.  He is a currently a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP), a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and an Information Systems Security Management Professional (ISSMP).
